Volleyball Leaves Colorado with Two Wins

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The University of La Verne volleyball team picked up a pair of wins in Colorado, finishing the 2019 Spike' It Up Classic 2-2.

La Verne 3, Willamette 1

Set Scores: 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18

Stat Leaders

Haley Celaya made her 2019 debut with a game-high 20 kills in the Leopards' tournament-opening win. The sophomore hit .333 in the match with seven digs and three blocks.

Freshman Ayana Mier had a dominant game attacking. The Pomona native finished with an outstanding .414 hitting percentage with 15 kills and four blocks.

Pi'ikea Clemens was solid both offensive and defensively for the Leopards, finishing with 11 kills, 13 digs, and three blocks. 

Emma Estigoy led all players with 21 digs and added two assists and a service ace. Madison Maynes stayed busy in the win, totaling 51 assists in the effort.

Darrah Jones finished with 10 digs, three kills, and an ace.

No. 7 Colorado College 3, La Verne 0

Set Scores: 25-23, 25-15, 25-21

The Leopards closed out the opening day of the tournament against the host team and once of the best squads in the country.

Stat Leaders

Clemens led La Verne with six kills, nine digs, and an assist. Maynes totaled 16 assists, four kills, and three digs.

Celaya added six kills, three aces, and one assist. Mier finished with five kills and two blocks. 

Jordyn Patton added two aces and a dig.

La Verne 3, LeTourneau 0

Set Scores: 25-22, 26-24, 25-22

The Leopards opened day two of the tournament with a close three-set win over the Tigers. 

Stat Leaders

Rylee Callen hit .308 in the match with five kills, two assists, and a dig. Mier finished with a team-high nine kills in the win and was crucial at the net with five blocks.

Maynes had a big all-around performance, totaling 10 digs, four kills, and three blocks to go with her game-high 48 assists.

Estigoy led the Leopards 18 digs. Clemens added four kills, four digs, one ace, and one assist.

MIT 3, La Verne 1

Set Scores: 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23

Stat Leaders

Jones led the Leopards in the finale of the tournament with a game-high 17 kills. The senior also added 15 digs and an ace.

Celaya also had a big game offensively with 16 kills. The sophomore also added three digs.

Emily Heldenbrand and Estigoy each totaled 18 digs in the match. Heldenbrand also contributed four kills and Estigoy dished out four assists.

Emily Cohen put down six kills, Callen added five kills, and Mier totaled four of her own.

Maynes tied a season-high 51 assists to go with 17 digs.

Season Impact

The Leopards move their record to 3-5 overall.

Next Match

The Leopards continue their busy slate of games this Friday at home in the annual Leopard Invitational. La Verne opens the invite on Friday with a 6 p.m. game against Pacific Lutheran and finishes with a pair of matches on Saturday.
