La Verne Suffers 6-5 Setback to Brown

The University of La Verne women's water polo suffered a 6-5 defeat against visiting Brown University in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon in Claremont.

The Leopards would attempt a fourth quarter comeback, scoring a pair of goals in the final frame but would ultimately fall short of their 10th victory of the year.

La Verne continued to counter the Brown offensive attack maintaining no more than a two goal difference for the duration of the match.  Despite Brown taking an early 1-0 advantage Stephanie Tuning would keep La Verne close with her game tying shot in the fourth minute.  Alexis Zamora and Tuning would counter a Bear goal with two consecutive strikes with a minute left to take a 3-2 heading into the second quarter.

However, the Leopard offense would stall allowing Brown to tie the match up just before the half.  The match would remain tied until the 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Brown added a goal to take a 4-3 lead.

The final frame would prove dramatic as the Leopard offense awoke to tack on a pair of goals courtesy of Ryanne Bible and Allison Gunby to come within one goal with just over a minute left.  A late Leopard exclusion would cause La Verne to be short-handed for the final push at the goal, resulting in a narrow defeat.

La Verne is now 9-15 on the year and will take on Whittier in SCIAC action Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
