Women's Water Polo Falls in SCIAC Opener

LA VERNE – Pomona-Pitzer used a big run in the middle of the game to defeat the University of La Verne women's water polo team, 9-4, on Wednesday at the La Verne Aquatic Center.

After Pomona-Pitzer took an early lead on goals by Mahalia Prater-Fahey and Alyssa Wodward, Amber Tardif scored out of a timeout to cut the Pomona-Pitzer lead to 2-1 at the 2:36 mark in the 1st quarter.

However, the Sagehens rattled off four unanswered goals and went on a 7-1 run to break the game open. Miranda Green had two goals during the run. Woodward, Chrissie Alving-Trinh, Christina Williamson and Hope Grant added one each.

Lora Marquez-Salgado stopped the momentum with a goal in the third quarter, but the Leopards could not gain any momentum.

Olga Quiroz and Catie Tuning each added a fourth quarter goal for the Leopards.

Jacqueline Rojas had another stellar game in the cage. The junior turned away 12 shots to keep the game from getting out of hand for La Verne.

Pomona-Pitzer's Ahsha Earwood also had 12 saves.

Woodward and Green finished with two goals each.

La Verne returns to action against Washington and Jefferson on Friday at the La Verne Aquatic Center.
