WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of La Verne women's water polo team fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter against Whittier and couldn't recover in a 13-4 loss on Wednesday at the Slade Aquatic Center.

The loss drops La Verne to 0-2 in SCIAC play. Whittier improves to 2-0.

After Catie Tuning tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 5:13 mark in the first quarter, the Poets rattled off four answered goals after Tuning's goal to open up a 5-1 lead.

The Leopards could not find any sort of offensive momentum. La Verne cut the deficit to three on two different occasions in the second quarter, but that was as close as it would get. Sarah Jefferis put one in near the six minute mark in the 2nd to make it 5-2 and Justine Mojarro scored one late in the second to make it 6-3. But each time, the Poets answered with mini runs and were able to pull away.

Freshman Brie Nelson-Thiede scored the first goal of her career late in the third quarter, but Whittier once against responded, this time with a shutout fourth quarter.

Five players finished with multiple goals for the Poets. Rivera and Arlin De La Mora led the way with a hat trick each. Laurel Pinkley, Jasmine Villalpando and Isabella Gorrocino added two apiece.

The Leopards return to the pool on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
