LA VERNE – The University of La Verne women's water polo team earned its first SCIAC win of the season against Caltech on Saturday morning at the La Verne Aquatics Center, but came up short against NAIA Concordia (Calif.) in the Satruday afternoon game and NCAA Division I No. 9 Hawaii on Sunday.

Game 1: La Verne 14, Caltech 4

La Verne led wire-to-wire as they cruised to a 14-4 victory.

Kimberly Lopez and Stephanie Fugit each registered a hat trick and six other Leopards contributed with at least one goal.

Lora Marquez-Salgado opened the scoring 35 seconds into the game, Justine Mojarro added two and Amber Tardif scored one in the 1st quarter as the Leopards jumped out to a 4-1 lead.

The Leopards scored four more in the 2nd quarter to pull away from the Beavers. Lopez had two, Megan Little netted one and Melanie Consiglio scored for the Leopards in the quarter.

La Verne shut out Caltech in the 3rd quarter and scored six more goals in second half to seal the win.

Marquez-Salgado and Mojarro finished with two goals each. Frances Viste, Little, Consiglio and Tardif contributed one goal each.

Jacqueline Rojas and Samary Morales split duties in the cage for the Leopards and collected three saves each.

Game 2: Concordia (Calif.) 17, La Verne 10

La Verne could not match the offensive firepower of Concordia in the second game of the day as it lost, 17-10.

Justine Mojarro's goal at the 1:38 mark in the 1st quarter got La Verne within 3-2, but the Leopards allowed two goals to the Eagles in the final minute and a half of the quarter to fall behind 5-2 and could not get back on track.

The Leopards added three goals in the 2nd, but Concordia responded with four of their own and the Eagles broke the game open with a 3-1 3rd quarter.

La Verne scored four in the final frame, but the Eagles had an answer after every goal as they outscored the Leopards 5-4 in the 4th.

Mojarro finished with three goals for a hat trick, and Catie Tuning and Sarah Jefferis each had two.

Kimberly Lopez, Maddie Lovrensky and Brie Nelson-Thiede chipped in one goal apiece.

Game 3: Hawaii 20, La Verne 4

Division I No. 9 Hawaii rattled off seven unanswered goals to start the game and ran away with a 20-4 victory.

Megan Little stopped the bleeding at the 5:57 mark in the second quarter and Lovrensky added one, but the Rainbow Wahine scored eight in the quarter to keep the Leopards at bay.

Tuning and Tardif each added a goal for La Verne.

Rojas had nine saves in net.

La Verne returns to SCIAC action next Saturday when it travels to Los Angeles to face Occidental.
