Hussein top DIII golfer after day one of CSUSM Invite

VISTA, Calif. — Hisham Hussein finished as the top NCAA Division III men's golfer after two rounds and the University of La Verne men's golf team closed out day one of the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational as the top DIII team.

Hussein, a junior, shot a 75 in the first round and improved by a stroke in the second round of the tournament for a two-round total of 149. The San Dimas native finished in a six-way tie for 14th overall in a field comprised of NCAA Division II and III institutions. 

The Leopards shot 306 as a team in the first round and improved by four strokes their next time out for a score of 608, six strokes ahead of the next Division III finisher Cal Lutheran. La Verne currently stands 10th overall.

Pitiluk Phanomchai was the next best Leopard finisher, ending in a tie for 29th after shooting a consistent 76 in both rounds. Aaron DiGiamarino made the biggest improvement between rounds, after shooting a 79 to open the tournament, the senior improved by four strokes shooting a 75 in the second round to tie for 39th.

Conner Davis ended the day in a tie for 50th finishing with a total score of 156, after shooting 79 in round one and 77 in round two. Teammate Jason Brown finished one stroke behind Davis, shooting 157 (76 round one, 81 round two) to tie for 53rd.
