CHINO HILLS, Calif. — Hisham Hussein finished day one tied for third individually and the No. 14 University of La Verne men's golf team ended the opening round of the 2018 SCIAC Men's Golf Championships at Los Serranos Country Club in third place.
The Leopards ended with a total score of 296, 10 strokes behind current leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Four Leopards finished in the top-15. The SCIAC Champion will be determined on the cumulative score from all seven rounds of SCIAC play this season.
Individually, Hussein ends day one in a five-way tie for third place. The junior started off strong with a birdie on the first hole before paring the next four holes. He bogeyed the sixth but recovered on the ninth with a birdie to go out with a 36. On the back nine, Hussein started a little shakey, bogeying the first two holes, but finished strong with five pars and a pair of birdies on the 15th and 18th to end round one with an even, 72.
Henrik Skogseth was the next best Leopard finisher, shooting a two-over, 74, to finish in a three-way tie for 10th. The Norway native finished the front nine with an even 36 with birdies on the second and ninth holes. He ended the first round with seven pars and two bogeys.
One stroke behind Skogseth was Pitiluk Phanomchai. After going out with a 39 in the front nine, Phanomchai recovered over the final nine holes, finishing with two birdies and ending with a round one card of three-over, 75, putting him in a tie for 13th.
Right there with Pahomchai was fellow freshman Jake Littlejohn. He struggled in the front nine finishing with five bogeys but he was stellar over the final nine holes. Littlejohn opened the back nine with a birdie before paring the next six holes. He birdied the 17th and pared the 18th to end with a three-over, 75.
Aaron DiGiamarino finished with a five-over, 77, and Conner Davis carded a six-over 78.
Next Round: The Leopards continue the tournament tomorrow with tee times beginning at 10 a.m.
