LA VERNE, Calif. — Sometimes in soccer, one play is all it takes to win or lose a game. On Saturday night, the University of La Verne men's soccer team was on the wrong end of that reality, losing to Chapman, 1-0, at Ortmayer Stadium in front of a crowd of 549.

How it happened: After executing its game plan to perfection in a 2-1 win at Redlands on Wednesday, La Verne looked sloppy against Chapman. The Leopards couldn't connect on passes, couldn't trap well and wasn't efficient in shot selection.

In the 82nd minute, Chapman's Karam Gill received a pass at the top right of the penalty box, turned around and fired a shot to upper left corner to give Chapman the lead. The Panthers were then able to hold on to the lead for the final eight minutes.

It spoke to La Verne's defensive organization that the team was able to hold the Panthers for most of the game. Although the Leopards couldn't get it going offensively, they executed their assignments on defense and were able to muck it up for the Panthers as well.

Player of the game: Darrin Bangle turned away four shots and there wasn't anything he could do about the lone goal. The junior goalkeeper has been excellent to start the season, making a total of 22 saves with at 0.57 goals allowed average.

From head coach Trevor Persson: "Our sense of urgency was really lacking today. We didn't show a lot of heart today, which they (Chapman) did. We struggled to keep the ball, we struggled to connect a pass, we struggled to trap. The guys might have had some heavy legs and we need to give him a little rest, but still we need to have a higher sense of urgency throughout the game."

Up next: La Verne (4-1-1, 1-1-0 SCIAC) hit their first road bump of the season, but it will have to bounce back quickly. The Leopards travel to Claremont on Monday to face the reigning SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m.
