LA VERNE, Calif. — Mario Interiano tucked away his first goal of the season, but Pomona-Pitzer's Peter Rentzepis headed in the game winner in the overtime – his second goal of the game – to beat the University of La Verne men's soccer team, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

How it happened: The golden goal came in the 99th minute when Rentzepis converted a free header off an Avery Raimondo cross from the right wing. The Pomona-Pitzer winger beat a La Verne defender on the right side and drove in a difficult cross into the box.

Interiano got the equalizer in the 65th minute off a rebound. After Harim Coronado's initial shot from the right side was deflected, Interiano collected the rebound and fired a shot that went in off the left post.

Both teams started out tentatively with neither side notching a shot on goal until Rentzepis in the 27th minute. After a scrum in the box, Rentzepis got a hold of a poor clearance just outside the six-yard box and laced it in for his first collegiate goal.

The Leopards stormed out of the halftime break with three straight shots that threatened the Pomona-Pitzer goal. Coronado hit the bottom of crossbar in the 50th minute and Nathan Gonzalez shot off the rebound of blocked. About a minute later, Javier Jasso launched one from about 20 yards out, but the shot sailed just high.

Players of the game: Interiano's goal gave La Verne a jolt of energy, but the Leopards just could not find the go-ahead goal.

Nick Gonsalves was effective off the bench as usual. The junior used his speed to get behind the back line and got off three shots with two of them on target. He also drew a couple of fouls that gave the Leopards that resulted in good set piece opportunities.

Stat of the game: The Leopards could not create a meaningful chance in extra time and were outshot, 3-0.

What it means: La Verne (4-3-1, 1-3-0 SCIAC) completes its most difficult part of the schedule. In a span of eight days, the Leopards have played the 2013 SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; 2013 SCIAC runner-up Redlands; 2013 SCIAC Postseason Tournament runner-up Chapman and a Pomona-Pitzer squad that's gotten off to a 2-0-1 start in SCIAC.

Up next: The Leopards will get a four-day break before they host Occidental on Monday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
