Men's Soccer rolls Caltech, stays alive in playoff race

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's soccer team routed Caltech, 6-0, at Ormayer Stadium on Monday night as five different players got on the board.

What it means: With the win, La Verne (11-7-1, 8-7-0 SCIAC) stays in the race for a berth in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, but the margin for entry got narrower as Redlands defeated Cal Lutheran, 2-1, to clinch the third spot in the tournament.

The only way for the Leopards to get in now is to win their final match at Occidental and Chapman to lose its remaining two games.

How it happened: The Leopards scored two goals in the game's first seven minutes and put the game away early.

In the fourth minute, Nathan Gonzalez tucked his second penalty goal in as many games after drawing the spot kick himself on the left side.

Jaime Moreno added to the lead five minutes later when he got a long ball from Justin Almandiger on the left wing, cut inside and buried a curling shot into the upper right corner.

The onslaught continued in the 29th minute. Auden Foxe got into the box from the right side and put in a low cross for Saul Uribe who converted it for his eighth goal of the season.

La Verne earned another penalty in the 36th minute and Ko Yajima put it in past Caltech goalkeeper John David Feist for his first goal of the season.

The Leopards further extended the lead in the second half on Gonzalez's second goal of the game and a Lorenzo Leyva strike in the 83rd minute.

Gonzalez now has five goals in his last three matches and has a total of 12 on the season.

Senior Night: Before the match, La Verne held a brief ceremony for its lone senior Erik LeVay, honoring his career. LeVay got the start in defense and contributed to the clean sheet.

Up next: La Verne will continue to fight for its playoff life at Occidental in the final match of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m.
