PASADENA — Nathan Gonzalez, Ferdinand Estrada and Saul Uribe of the University of La Verne men's soccer team were selected to All-SCIAC teams on Wednesday, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Gonzalez, who led the team in scoring last season as a freshman, became one of the best forwards in the SCIAC this season. He earns his first First Team spot after being named to Second Team last year. He scored 11 goals in SCIAC play, which was good for second in the league, and added three assists for a total of 25 attacking points. Gonzalez gave SCIAC defenses fits this year with his speed and control of the ball.
Estrada was named to the Second Team as a freshman. He settled right into the right side of the defense and provided the Leopards with a veteran's presence. He made the right reads, knew when to go for the tackle and made good passes out of the back. He contributed six clean sheets in 2014.
Uribe ended the season with eight goals and was also named to the Second Team. Had it not been for a nagging midseason injury, the sophomore probably would have reached double-digits scoring. Despite the injury, Uribe's speed and burst allowed him to get behind defenses with darting runs with or without the ball.
Charles Izydorek of Redlands was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year. Tod Kawada of Occidental won the Newcomer of the Year Award, Caltech's Marec Serlin earned the Brine Award of Distinction and Bill Swartz of Pomona-Pitzer was awarded the SCIAC Coach of the Year.
