Men’s Soccer misses chances at Oxy in season finale

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne men's soccer team had a plenty of chances but could not convert any into goals and lost to Occidental, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kemp Stadium.

La Verne started the game with purpose and intensity, forcing Occidental goalkeeper Ian Agrimis to make three saves in the first six minutes. Nathan Gonzalez had two looks at the goal, Luis Vargas got a headed shot but Agrimis made a couple of acrobatic saves to turn the Leopards away.

Agrimis's efforts seemed to awaken the Tigers. Oxy launched the game's next three shots and in the 19th minute drew a foul from goalkeeper Darrin Bangle inside the 18-yard box to earn a penalty.

Santiago Bedoya-Gall punched in the spot kick and it was all Oxy from there. Tod Kawada made it 2-0 in the 30th minute after a through ball freed him. Zack Conrad found the net 10 minutes into the second half and Daniel Lawson and Brooks Yeager each added a goal to give Oxy a decisive 5-0 win.

The Leopards outshot the Tigers, 10-3, in the second half and had a couple of chances late to get on the board but the luck just wasn't on their side. Harim Coronado and Gonzalez both hit the crossbar in the 79th and the 87th minute, respectively, and a host of other shots just missed the frame.

La Verne ends the season sixth in the SCIAC with a record of 8-8-0 and 11-8-1 overall. The Leopards went through some growing pains and bouts of inconsistency under the first year head coach Trevor Persson, but will return all but one player from this year's squad as it looks to finish top-four in 2015.
