Men's Soccer rolls past St. Katherine in season opener

LA VERNE, Calif. — Six different players scored and the University of La Verne men's soccer team dominated St. Katherine on their way to a 7-0 win Friday night at Ortmayer Stadium. Christopher Wong led the Leopards with two goals, one in the first half to put La Verne up 2-0 and again in the 69th minute off an assist by Abdul Badawiya to extend the lead to 5-0.

Both sides played tight defense in the opening minutes with neither team able to get clean looks at the net. That was until Ferdinand Estrada connected with Badawiya who scored the opening goal of the season in the 12th minute.

Wong added his first goal in the 31st minute to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead at the break.

La Verne kept the momentum rolling in the second half when freshman Daniel Ortega scored the first goal of his Leopard career in the 60th minute.

The Leopards ran away with the game midway through the second half when they scored three goals in less than four minutes. Jack Kolodge, Wong, and Javier Jasso each found the back of he net during the stretch.

Senior Carlos Chavez added the final goal for La Verne with just under three minutes left in the game off an assist by Ortega.

The Leopards defense was solid all night, limiting the Firebirds attack. Rene Gonzalez got the start in the box earning the win.

La Verne returns to action next Monday, September 4 when they host Willamette at 7 p.m.
