LA VERNE, Calif. — Andrew Maldonado scored for the University of La Verne men's soccer team to tie the game in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net after that point, and the Leopards and Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens tied 1-1 Wednesday night.
Season Impact: The Leopards move to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens now stand at 3-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference.
After Aidan Ferrer gave the Sagehens the early 1-0 lead, scoring an unassisted goal in the 33 minute, Maldonado notched the equalizer in spectacular fashion.
The senior gathered the ball from 35 yards out, saw the Sagehen keeper up in the box, and launched the long shot to the back corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
But that was all the scoring the Leopards could muster. La Verne came close with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half. Carlos Chavez laid down a hard shot to the ride side of the net, forcing the Pomona-Pitzer keeper Ben Mitchell to make a diving save to keep the game even.
The Leopards had another good chance in the 73rd minute. Javier Jasso sent a shot to the right side of the net only to have it saved by a diving Mitchell.
Tristan Polakowski got the start in the net for La Verne and totaled two saves. Josh Ramirez finished with three saves.
Next Game: The Leopards head to Thousand Oaks to face the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen this Saturday at 5 p.m.
