Late goals hurt Men's Soccer in loss to Occidental

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's soccer team stayed even with Occidental College through 76 minutes, but a pair of goals by the Tigers sealed a 3-1 win for the visitors Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

After the Tigers took the opening lead in the 15th minute off a goal from Ariel Rosso, it took the Leopards just three minutes to respond. Freshman Johnny DeRueda scored his team-leading fifth goal to even the game at 1-1.

The teams went into the break still at a stalemate and it would stay that way 22 minutes into the second half. That's when Occidental's Nate Dunning scored to give the Tigers the lead for good.

Liam Walsh scored the insurance goal for the Tigers two minutes later to put the final a 3-1.

Josh Ramirez finished the game with four saves.

The Leopards had their chances early, totaling five shots in the opening half, but could only manage three in the second period.

Occidental kept the Leopards defense busy early, turning in seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. But the La Verne's backline was able to fend off the attacks.

Season Impact: The Leopards fall to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in SCIAC play. The Tigers improve to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Next Game:  The Leopards return to action next Wednesday, September 27 when they host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 7 p.m.
