Hernandez's goal gives Leopards win in 2OT

WHITTIER, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's soccer team finished out a gritty performance on the road to score a 1-0 double overtime win over the Whittier College Poets Wednesday night.

In the 104th minute, the Leopards got fouled in their own defensive half. La Verne played a long ball into the box, won a header, and Luis Hernandez finished off the play with the game-winning goal to cap off an action filled game.

"It was a tough, scrappy, back and forth game," said Head Coach Trevor Persson. "I think we showed a lot of character coming off a hard loss earlier this week. Our guys showed a lot of determination and earned a hard fought victory."

The Leopards' backline played well, helping limit the number of quality shots taken by the Poets. Keeper Josh Ramirez came up big with seven saves.

Both teams had a hard time keeping possession in the game, with most attacking opportunities coming off of transition.

"We've done a good job of creating opportunities for us at the top of the box but have had some trouble finishing off those chances," said Persson. "I was happy to see us finish in a big way tonight."

Season Impact: The Leopard improve to 8-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the SCIAC. Whittier drops to 3-10 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Next Game: The Leopards will play their final game of the season and celebrate seniors Carlos ChavezFerdinand EstradaAuden FoxeJavier JassoAndrew Maldonado, and Anton Russell this Saturday when they play the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags at 11 a.m.
