La Verne Sweeps Past Stags

La Verne extended its win streak to six games after taking both games of a doubleheader against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday to complete a sweep of the three weekend games against the Stags.

The Leopards opened with an 8-2 triumph in Game 1 and followed with a 13-4 triumph at Arce Field in Claremont.

In the first game, the Leos led 3-2 before plating three runs in the eighth and two runs to pull away from the Stags.  The Leopards were aided by a pinch hit homer from freshman Albert Ramos to help secure the win.

Starting pitcher Tim Jolly went 7.2 innings allowing two runs on nine hits before giving way to Anthony Cerafice and David Contreras, who held the Stags scoreless over the final 1.1 innings.

La Verne collected 15 hits in the second game and broke the contest open with an eight-run outburst in the ninth inning to turn a 5-4 lead into a comfortable 13-4 advantage.  Cody Hazel went 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Joe Buckley went 2-2 including a solo homer with 2 runs scored.

Mark Larini earned the start for the Leopards and allowed two runs in five innings pitched.  Cerafice (2.2 innings) and Contreras (1.1) pitched the last four innings yielding two runs on five hits.

The Leopards outscored the Stags 36-7 over the three games.  Currently La Verne stands in third place in the league standings tied with Cal Lutheran.

La Verne (19-13, 13-8 SCIAC) continues action on the road on Friday to takes on SCIAC co-leader Redlands.  First pitch is 3 pm.
