Combining for 27 runs and 28 hits, the University of La Verne completed the California Classic with a pair of wins on Sunday, defeating Rutgers-Newark 16-9 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-6 at Ben Hines Field.

The victories gave the Leopards a 4-0 mark in the Cal Classic and extended their win streak to seven games.

The Leos trailed Rutgers-Newark 9-3 entering the seventh inning before compiling 13 runs in the final three frames.

Mike Surina stroked a 2-run homer in the seventh inning to narrow the deficit to 9-5.  In the eighth, the Leopards collected four runs on just two hits as Rutgers-Newark pitchers hit three batters and surrendered two walks in the inning.

The Leopards erupted for seven runs in the ninth, beginning with a solo homer from Jon-Michael Hattabaugh.  From there, La Verne added six runs and six hits.  The inning included Hattabaugh adding a run-scoring single along with a steal of home by Zach Canfield.

Leopard pitchers held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless over the final three innings with Anthony Cerafice earning the win.

Hattabaugh went 4-6 with 4 RBI to lead a La Verne offensive attack that produced 15 hits in the contest.

The Leopards concluded action against familiar foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a non-conference clash.  La Verne's offense continued to stay hot by scoring three runs in the first, two in the second and two in the third to grab a 7-2 advantage.

La Verne built an 11-2 lead before the Stags added four runs in the eighth inning to provide the final margin.

Starting pitcher Victor Peinado earned the win by yielding two runs on three hits in six innings of work.  Hattabaugh and Surina each collected three hits against the Stags.

The Leopards resume SCIAC play this Friday as they host Cal Lutheran in the first game of a three-game series.
