Leopards Drop Slugfest Against Sagehens

A plethora of offense was on display at Ben Hines Field as a game that produced 24 runs and 29 hits went to Pomona-Pitzer, which held on to defeat La Verne 14-10 on Sunday.

The Leopards trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Victor Peinado smacked a 2-run homer over the rightfield wall estimated at 440 feet to tie the game at 2-2.

Pomona-Pitzer grabbed the lead by tallying four runs in the third inning to grab a 6-2 advantage.  The Hens added three runs in the seventh to take a 10-3 lead.

Trailing 10-4, the Leopards plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a 3-run triple from Mike Surina and an RBI groundout from Jon-Michael Hattabaugh to close the deficit to 10-8.

The Hens would take advantage of two Leopard errors to tally four runs to take a 14-8 lead.  La Verne countered with a pair of runs to pull within four at 14-10 on RBIs from Cody Hazel and Mike Belcher.  The Leos had the bases loaded when Sagehens pitcher James Kang recorded the game-ending strikeout on Hattabaugh.

Pomona-Pitzer's Nick Munzer went 4-4 with 5 runs scored and 3 RBI.  For La Verne, Hattabuagh went 3-6 on the day with Peinado finishing 2-2 with 4 RBI.

With the win the Sagehens regain sole possession of first place in the SCIAC as a result of Occidental's 6-3 win over Redlands.  The Hens improve to 26-8 overall and 20-4 in league play.  La Verne drops to 20-15 and 14-10, respectively.

La Verne continues action on Monday with a non-conference home tilt against Menlo College beginning at 3 pm.
