The University of La Verne pounded out 16 hits and was bolstered by a 7-run seventh inning to earn a 15-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in SCIAC action Friday at Ben Hines Field.
The Leopards (17-13, 11-8 SCIAC) scored a run in the first inning on a Mark Larini leadoff triple and RBI single from Sergio Munoz. The Leos added two runs in both the third and fourth frames to take a 5-0 advantage.
In the third, Larini doubled and was driven home by a Munoz single. Munoz eventually scored on a Mike Surina single to open a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Kevin Ibarra led off with a homer to pad the margin to 4-0. Joe Buckley walked and came around on a single, wild pitch and sacrifice fly.
Leading 6-1 in the seventh, the Leopards erupted for 7 runs on 5 hits and an error to grab a 13-1 cushion. With one out in the seventh, La Verne put together three straight hits - a Surina single, a Jon-Michael Hattabaugh RBI triple and a RBI single from Ibarra to push the lead to 8-1. Aaron Coopman delivered a bases loaded single to score Ibarra and Victor Peinado to stretch the Leopard lead to 10-1. An RBI single from Munoz followed by bases loaded walks to Hattabaugh and Surina completed the 7-run frame.
Buckley belted a 2-run homer in the eighth to close out the scoring for the Leopards.
La Verne starting pitcher Matt Baudino was the primary beneficiary of the run support, allowing 7 hits with 0 earned runs in 7 innings of work. Baudino struck out 4 batters.
The Leos and Stags conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday in Claremont. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
