Leopards Defeat Occidental

The University of La Verne baseball team snapped a two-game skid with a 4-2 road victory over Occidental College in SCIAC action Friday afternoon in Eagle Rock.

Oxy grabbed the lead in the bottom of first, plating a pair of runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead.  Pedro Aldape and Stephen Hilliard each collected RBI singles for the Tigers. 

La Verne countered by scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the third.  With the bases loaded, Kevin Ibarra walked to force in a run.  Victor Peinado followed with a 2-run single to score Mike Surina and Jon-Michael Hattabaugh.  Ibarra scored when Joe Buckley reached on a fielder's choice.

Leopard starter Matt Baudino pitched 6.2 innings for the win, striking out five Tigers.  Set-up man Anthony Cerafice held the Tigers in check in the eighth while closer David Contreras struck out the side in the ninth.

The Leopards tallied nine hits for the game.  Surina was 2-3 with 2 walks, Peinado finished 2-5 with 2 RBI and shortstop Mark Larini went 2-4 with a run scored.

With the win the Leopards improve to 15-10 in conference play and 21-16 overall.  Oxy fell to 10-15 and 13-21, respectively.

La Verne continues SCIAC action Saturday as it hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Ben Hines Field for a 1 pm start.
