LA VERNE, CA — Matthew Salas has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week the SCIAC office announced.
Salas earns the recognition after breaking the University of La Verne's 800m record at the Brian Clay Invitational held at Azusa Pacific University.
Salas clocked in at 1:52.41, breaking the old record of 1:54.10 set by Michael Sacoto in 2011. Salas finished the race as the top NCAA Division III athlete in the event.
The sophomore is the second member of the La Verne men's track and field team to earn conference athlete of the week honors this season. Matthew Pedroza earned SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week honors in February after his performance at Biola.
