Leopards Set Record At Occidental Distance Carnival

Los Angeles, California - The University of La Verne's track and field distance group competed at the Occidental Distance Carnival on Saturday night. In the women's competition, Janelle Baeskens ran her best race of the season with a strong 18:58 5k, taking another step towards her personal record. Alexia Alvarez just missed her PR but the meet enabled her to gain tremendous experience in a big meet. Andrea Camacho set a 1500 PR and raced strongly at the meet.

In the men's competition, it was a historic day for the Leopards program. Michael Sahagun set the school record in the 5k, his 3rd school record in as many weeks. In the later heats, Efren Martin ran a massive PR of 15:20 which put him number five all-time for La Verne (behind two of his teammates) and Jose Reyes ran 15:33 for a big PR (number nine all-time) and his best race of the season. Jared Albaugh had his first crack of the year at his primary event, the 1500, and set a PR by ten seconds. Marcelo Martinez competed in his first real event of the season as he had been out and recovering from a major injury.

Edward Carrillo and TK Berhe brought the fireworks for the most exciting race of the night. Edward improved over a minute in the 10k to move himself up to number four all-time for La Verne at 30:20, running a really smart and strong race, breaking his 5k PR in the second half of the race. TK Berhe eclipsed the old school record by nine seconds, running with incredible grit and determination. In the second half of the race he also PR'd in the 5k, and in the 3200 covering his last two miles in 9:34! He missed the top-10 all-time SCIAC list by only one second.

The team's performance was a tremendous springboard that will continue to set them up for even more success over the coming weeks.
