LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne swim and dive teams opened the 2018-19 season with a home exhibition against Mt. SAC Saturday morning.
The women won eight of ten events, sweeping the top three spots in five of those events. Leading the women was Rachel Fox. The senior won all four of her races, taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:05.31), 100 breaststroke (1:12.72) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.82). She also swam breaststroke in the winning 200 medley relay (1:59.00).
Making a stellar debut for the Leopards was freshman Alondra Camacho. Camacho also took first in four events. Individually, she touched first in the 100 IM with a time of 1:07.62 and in the 100 backstroke at 1:05.05. She also swam legs in the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
Adding to the women's win was senior captain Kayla Yip and senior transfer Makenna Bertrand. The pair were on both winning relays with Yip winning the 100 fly (1:04.21) and Bertrand taking the 500 free (5:50.08).
The men also had a great day splitting the events with the Mounties. Senior Brandon Pon won both his individual events the 200 freestyle (1:48.64) and the 500 free (4:55.44). Senior Kristofer Grigorian and sophomore Lorenzo DeLeon added individual wins and joined up with captain CJ Woodward and freshman Trevor Ichiki to win the 200 freestyle relay. Grigorian added a win in the 100 freestyle (51.08) and DeLeon won the 100 backstroke (56.63).
The rain and cold did not seem to affect the Leopards' performances with a lot of the new swimmers having lifetime bests.
