Garcia, Leopards Roll Past Bethesda

LA VERNE, CA — Destinee Garcia did it all, the Leopards past the century mark for the second time this season, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team rolled past the Bethesda University Flames 101-69 Tuesday night.

Season Impact: The Leopards get back in the win column and improve to 6-2 overall. The Flames drop to 1-15.

Garcia had her way with the Flames. The senior notched the best game of her Leopard career, highlighted by 9-12 shooting and a career-high 18 points. The Visalia native also tied a career-high five steals to go with eight rebounds, one block, and one assist. 

Sharpshooter Rebecca Horn had a big game for the Leopards, finishing with 15 points. The junior totaled five three-pointers, two shy of her career-high.

The Leopards got off to a quick start, scoring the first 11 points of the game led by six points from Garcia. Garcia couldn't be stopped in the first half, shooting 6-7 from the floor. Horn showcased her range early in the game, sinking three shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter. 

La Verne took a 51-26 lead at the break and the Flames never got close to threatening the Leopards' lead.

Rachel Gafford had a solid game off the bench. The freshman finished in double figures for the third time in her career, totaling 10 points and three rebounds. Casey Kuramoto knocked down two second half three-pointers on her way to 13 points. The guard also dished out two assists and finished with one steal and one rebound.

Charnpreet Takher led the Leopards with nine rebounds in the win. Jazzlyn Johnson totaled eight points, five steals, four rebounds, and one assist. Jasmine Xiong added six points, four steals, four assists, and one rebound.

La Verne forced 34 turnovers and turned them into 39 points. Sixteen different Leopards scored in the win and La Verne outrebounded the Flames 66-45.

Tanika Stephenson led Bethesda with game-high 33 points and seven rebounds. Lauryn Dodd led all players with 13 rebounds.

Next Game

La Verne takes its first road trip of the year and will face a pair of NCAA Divison I opponents. The Leopards open the road stretch on Thursday, December 12 when they take on the Fresno State Bulldogs at 11 a.m. The Leopards then travel to face the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday at 1 p.m.
