PASADENA, CA — The Leopards got out to a big first-quarter lead and the game was never in question as the University of La Verne women's basketball team rolled to an 82-59 road win over the Caltech Beavers Saturday evening.
Season Impact
With the win, the Leopards improve to 12-6 overall and with seven regular-season games left to play have already matched last year's total win total. La Verne currently sits in sixth place with a 5-5 SCIAC record but its postseason aspirations are still very much alive.
The Beavers drop to 4-16 overall and 2-9 in the SCIAC.
Stat Leaders
Dejanee Gill had another big game for the Leopards, finishing with a game-high 23 points. Gill scored 10 points in the opening period to give her squad a 21-7 lead entering the second quarter. The junior has scored at least 20 points in three of her last four games and has finished in double figures in five-straight contests. Gill added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Maydeen Merino was outstanding in her season debut. The senior knocked down five three-pointers, all in the fourth quarter to finish with a career-high 15 points.
Destinee Garcia and Charnpreet Takher both made big impacts off the glass, finishing with 10 and eight rebounds respectively.
The Beavers were led by Grace Peng's 20 points.
La Verne dominated off the boards, outrebounding Caltech 63-38. The rebounding advantage led to 21 second-chance points for the Leopards.
Fifteen different Leopards scored in the win and La Verne finished with an outstanding 51 bench points.
Next Game
The Leopards get back to action this Wednesday when they travel to Whittier to take on the Poets at 7 p.m. La Verne scored a big 78-72 comeback win over the Poets in the SCIAC opener earlier this season.
