LA VERNE, CA — Destinee Garcia did it all, four Leopards finished in double figures, and the University of La Verne rode a big first half to a 73-55 win over the Caltech Beavers.
Season Impact
The Leopards start the new year with a win and improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC. La Verne's four-game win-streak is the longest active win streak in the SCIAC.
The Beavers fall to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Garcia played the best overall game of the season and nearly notched a triple-double. The senior scored 12 points, grabbed a team and career-high 11 rebounds, dished out a career-high eight assists, added five steals, and blocked three shots. It is the first double-double of her Leopard career.
Madison Hotchkiss drained a career-high four three-pointers on her way to a career-high 14 points. The junior grabbed a pair of rebounds and dished out two assists. DeJanee Gill added 14 points and went a perfect 4-4 from the line. Gill added eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Jazzlyn Johnson totaled 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Alondra Ponce finished with seven rebounds, seven points, three assists, and a block.
Caltech was led by Grace Peng's 16 points and Sahana Saikumar's 16 rebounds.
The Leopards' 18 points off of turnovers proved to be the difference in the game. La Verne took a 35-15 lead at the half and extended its lead to 27 points midway through the third quarter.
Next Game
The Leopards continue SCIAC action with a big game at Pomona-Pitzer this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Sagehens and Leopards are tied for second place in the SCIAC.
