LA VERNE, CA — A golden goal from the Athenas' leading scorer Kaitlyn Helfrich lifted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps past the University of La Verne women's soccer team in their season's revenge game against the Leopards.
The freshman midfielder continued her impressive freshman campaign with a hero's performance to cap off Saturday's contest at Ortmayer Stadium. In the fourth minute of overtime, Helfrich nailed her seventh goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Maggiore's full-extension leap to seal the 2-1 win for the Athenas
Both teams played lights-out defense until the 75th minute. The Athenas broke the scoreless tie on junior defender Sam Ree's first goal of the season, but could not keep the Leopards quiet for much longer.
Eight minutes later, freshman defender Shelbie Mueller recorded her first collegiate goal to equalize the score and keep La Verne's hopes alive into overtime.
The Leopards suffered their seventh conference loss in heartbreaking fashion but will have the week to rebuild. La Verne will fight a win at Chapman on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
