Two matches produced two very different results for the University of La Verne volleyball squad as it opened the 2012 season at home against a pair of nationally-ranked teams at the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament.

La Verne began the day with a resounding 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of AVCA No. 16 UMass Boston before falling in a five-set battle to No. 14 Colorado College by scores of 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 12-15 at Frantz Athletic Court.

Against the Beacons, the Leopards hit .311 in the three-set match while holding the visitors to a .075 clip.  Senior Randi Taylor-Toomay collected 14 kills while fellow senior Catie Logan hit .556 in posting a .556 hitting percentage.  Freshman Brittany Yaxley also finished with 10 kills.  Converted setter Morgan Donohue dished out 41 assists in the win.

The Leopards dropped the opening set against the Tigers but rallied to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth frame before eventually bowing in five sets.  Colorado College broke a 7-7 deadlock in the final set to win four of the next five points to avoid the upset.  The Tigers were bolstered by a .300 hitting percentage in the fifth frame.

Yaxley (20) and Taylor-Toomay (19) combined for 39 kills while Logan added 10 kills for the Leopards.

La Verne (1-1) continues Pacific Coast Classic action Saturday as it opens against NYU Polytechnic in a 9 am start and will close against Baldwin Wallace scheduled for 3:30 pm.
