The University of La Verne ran its win streak to nine consecutive matches as it defeated the University of Redlands in a three-set sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12 in SCIAC volleyball action Friday night at Frantz Athletic Court.
La Verne (17-2, 10-1 SCIAC) posted 7 total blocks and 48 digs on the night to hold Redlands to a .089 hitting percentage on the evening.
The Leopards enjoyed a fast start to the match by jumping out to a 6-0 lead on the Bulldogs in the opening set. Maintaining its momentum, the Green and Orange opened a 20-13 advantage before the Bulldogs got to within one on a service ace from Alisha Cornick to slice the lead to 23-22. Taylor-Toomay put an end to the threat with consecutive kills to give the Leos a 1-0 set lead.
In the second set, a back-and-forth battle ensued in the opening stages before the Bulldogs seized a 14-13 lead. La Verne would proceed to outscore Redlands 8-2 to forge ahead with a 21-16 advantage on its way to a 25-18 set triumph.
La Verne dominated the third frame, embarking on a decisive 11-0 run midway through the set to take a commanding 20-7 lead. Leading 22-12, the Leos would score the final three points to win 25-12 and conclude the match in a sweep. The Leopards have won each of their last four matches in three sets.
Randi Taylor-Toomay posted team-highs of 11 kills and 12 digs for the Leopards with Catie Logan and Ashlyn Cross adding 8 and 6 kills, respectively. Setter Kendall Kraiss tallied 26 assists in the victory.
The Leopards will travel to Orange on Saturday to face Chapman University (16-4, 9-1 SCIAC) in a battle of one-loss conference squads. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
