A second round matchup between the University of La Verne and Cal Lutheran went in favor of the visitors as the Regals recorded a 27-25, 25-20, 25-16 triumph over the Leopards in SCIAC volleyball action Tuesday night at Frantz Athletic Court.

Ranked eighth in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, Cal Lutheran (19-4, 10-1 SCIAC) proved its status as one the nation's top squads by hitting .265 for the contest while earning the edge on the Leopards in kills (47-36), total blocks (8-4) and digs (54-42).

A spirited first set saw the Regals grab a 16-12 lead before the Leopards reeled off four consecutive points - the last coming on a kill from Kayla Cribbs - to knot the contest at 16.  CLU would regain momentum and take a 21-18 edge.  La Verne would battle back to tie the set at 23 and 24, and would claim a set point at 25-24 on a Regal attack error.   Cal Lutheran would respond by claiming the next three points, ending the run on a Kylie McLogan kill to take the set 27-25.

In the second frame, La Verne (17-4, 10-3 SCIAC) took an early 4-2 advantage before Cal Lutheran took the lead for good on a kill from Shannon Pearson to go up 7-6.  The Regals stretched their lead to 17-11, but La Verne closed to 20-18 on consecutive kills from Randi Taylor-Toomay.  Cal Lutheran countered by taking four of the next five points to take a 23-19 lead, eventually closing out with a 25-20 set win.

The Leopards continue to battle in the third set, splitting the opening stages with the Regals to an early 10-10 tie.  Cal Lutheran would later seize control of the frame with an 8-2 run to lead 18-12 and would hold a 22-16 advantage before posting the final three points to take the match.

Kylie McLogan led the Cal Lutheran attack with a match-high 17 kills while setter Jena Chavez totaled a match-high 44 assists.

For La Verne, Cribbs and Taylor-Toomay each recorded 11 kills with Brittany Yaxley adding 11 on the evening.  Kendall Kraiss posted team-highs of 32 assists and 15 digs.

The Leopards step out of conference in their next match as they take on UC Santa Cruz Friday evening at Frantz Athletic Court in a 7:30 pm start.
