Leopards Split Doubleheader Against Chapman

The University of La Verne baseball squad would split Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against the visiting Chapman University Panthers at Mazmanian Field on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Untimely errors and an aggressive Chapman offense would result in the Leopards' 11-3 defeat in Game 1. La Verne rebounded to outslug the Panthers in a 4-1 victory in the second game.

In the opener, Chapman's Andrew Saatzer brought across three with a home run to left center in the top of the first, but La Verne answered back with a string of hits, including a George Hanna two-run double, and an RBI single from Mike Stewart to bring in three runs of their own in the bottom-half of the first inning.

However, the Leopard bats would go silent, scattering only three hits in the remaining innings.  Chapman would remain aggressive putting together a four-run fourth inning and a three-run eighth to pull away from the Leopards in an 11-3 final.

The tone for game two was set immediately by La Verne starter Phil Schick whose command of the strike zone and quick tempo kept the previously potent Chapman offense at bay.  Schick went 6.0 innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just three hits while receiving help from Mason Stoltenberg, Cody Hazel, Nolan Henley, and Michael Reyes who provided Schick a four-run cushion to work with in the 4-1 victory to salvage the final game of the series.

Javi Iniguez and Brett Early combined for 3.0 innings of relief work.  Schick is now 1-1 on the year; Early captured his first save of the year.

La Verne (6-4, 3-3 SCIAC) goes on the road to take on Caltech in Pasadena on Friday at 2:30 pm.
