Leopards Top Poets in Season Finale

The University of La Verne baseball team ended the 2013 campaign with a 4-3 victory over Whittier College in 11 innings Tuesday afternoon iat Memorial Field in Whittier. 

The Leopards would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second.  Pedro Espinoza to right center followed by consecutive singles from Jason Moralez and Tim Ralston that would load the bases with no outs.  Senior Cody Hazel would then provide an RBI single to score Espinoza and put the Leopards up 1-0.  Nolan Henley would then draw the walk bringing Moralez, followed by a sacrifice fly from Michael "Woody" Reyes to bring in Ralston to cap the three-run frame.

Whittier starter Bobby Santoyo would settle down after the second and retire 15 of the next 18 batters he faced.  The Poets would score once in the fourth and eventually even the contest with two runs in the seventh aided by a safety squeeze and RBI single to left field. 

The Poets once again threatened to go ahead and take the lead in bottom of the eighth loading the bases with no outs.  However, Leopard reliever Phil Schick would enter the game and halt the Poet rally striking out one and receiving help from left fielder Adrian Franco who would throw out the runner at home who attempted to tag up and score on the foul out. 

In the bottom of the ninth La Verne would once again hold the Poets from scoring forcing the extra frame. 

The Leopards would seize a two-out opportunity in the 11th inning with David Finneran reaching base after an error by the pitcher.  Jared Hovsepian would then provide a pinch-hit single advancing Finneran into scoring position.  Josh Surdo produced the go ahead run with an infield single that would put La Verne up 4-3.

Jason Moralez entered in relief for Schick in the bottom of the 11th to record the final two outs and capture his first save of the year. In the process, the Leopards swept the four conference games against the Poets.

Schick would record the victory, finishing with a 6-5 record on the year.  Offensively, Mason Stoltenberg, George Hanna, and Hazel would pace the Leopards with two hits apiece.

With the victory the Leopards finish the 2013 campaign with a 22-16 overall record and a 16-12 mark in conference play.
