Leopard Baseball Completes Sweep of Caltech

Leopard Baseball Completes Sweep of Caltech

The University of La Verne baseball team completed the weekend sweep of the visiting Caltech Beavers Saturday afternoon at Arce Field on the campus of Claremont McKenna.  After Friday's 18-1 rout over the Beavers, the Leopard bats would cool in the 5-3 and 6-0 victories.

After Friday's impressive offense performance, the Leopard bats were dialed back as La Verne struggled to convert hits into runs, scattering five runs in game one of the twinbill.

Dylan Leong, Nolan Henley, Jason Moralez, Tim  Ralston, and George Hanna all had two hits in the 5-3 victory.  However, the presure would mount in the top of the ninth as Caltech brought a runner across and threatened with runners in scoring position.  The tide would turn when the Caltech runner would get picked off at second base.  Phil Schick would then enter the game and strike out the final batter to secure the La Verne win.

The game two victory was captained by Schick who once again demonstrated powerful command of the strike zone.  Schick went eight complete innings, giving up just 6 hits, and striking out 12 to earn the victory after securing a save in game one. A four-run third inning would provide Schick a generous cushion to work with.  The four-run third was higlighted by a George Holland RBI double and a two RBI single from Michael Stewart.  Holland and Stewart anchored the Leopard offense accounting for four of the game's six runs.

With the sweep La Verne improves to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in SCIAC play.  The Leopards take a break from SCIAC action and take on Kean next Friday in Whittier at 2:30 pm
