Baseball Sweeps Twinbill Against CMS

The University of La Verne recovered from Friday night defeat by sweeping the doubleheader against SCIAC foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday by scores of 8-2 and 8-7 in conference baseball action at Arce Field.

The day's first contest would remain deadlocked 2-2 until the Leopard offensive exploded with a six-run seventh inning to cement the game.  Singles by George Hana and Michael Stewart would bring Dylan Leong and Josh Surdo across the plate to start the inning, giving La Verne the opportunity to capitalize on a hit batsmen and an error by the first baseman.

La Verne tallied 12 hits in the Game 1 victory and were led offensively by Leong  who finished the day 2-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and an RBI and Nicholas Bergara who collected three hits of his own en route to a 3-4 day.  The combined effort of Christian Grossi, Brett Early and Sean Beckman would keep the Stag offense at bay and limited to just two runs.

Game two of the twinbill would prove to be much more dramatic as both offenses were productive in tallying a combined 23 hits.

Despite the Leopards striking first in the opening frame of the contest, CMS would bring across five to take a 5-2 lead after two innings.  La Verne would answer back in the top of the fourth as Jared Hovsepian singled to left field bringing in Pedro Espinosa and Nolan Henley belted a 3 run home-run to tie the game up. The Leopards would score an additional three runs in the next innings when Espinosa singled in Surdo in the top of the fifth and as Henley and Leong crossed the plate in the sixth.

CMS would pressure in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double but the combination of Phil Schick and J.C. Barcelo would be enough to hold the Stags to preserve the victory.

La Verne improves to 14-7 on the year and 8-4 in SCIAC action.  The Leopards go on the road to take on Pomona-Pitzer March 29 at 3pm.
