Baseball wins big twice on Saturday

TUCSON, AZ — The Leopards ended day two of Cactus Classic with 29 runs off 29 hits and rolled to a pair of big wins over Northwest Conference opponents Saturday afternoon.

Game One: La Verne 12, George Fox 2

Shortstop Jacob Benson led the Leopards with four RBI, Ryan Galan and Jacob Freedman added a pair each as La Verne jumped on the Bruins in the first ending to come away with their first win of the season.

Already leading 1-0 after John Bike walked with the bases loaded, Jacob Freedman singled to right to score Christopher Peres and Tanner Siffert to put the Leopards up 3-0 with just one out. 

Brandon Vogel extended the lead two batters later with a ground out RBI the brought home Bike. 

Benson notched his first two RBI of the game in his first at bat, capping off the six-run inning with a single up the middle that sent Brandon Shiota and Freedman across the plate.

Pitcher Cody Norman never let the Bruins get close. The junior right-hander went five innings, striking out four with just one walk. Alec Telles stepped in for the final four innings, striking out two with just two hits.

Shiota finished 3-4 at the plate with two runs. Freedman added two hits and four runs. Catcher Adam Santa Cruz finished with two hits and an RBI.

Galan, Freedman, and Benson each totaled two hits. Sieffert drew three walks and scored twice.

Marc Audet and Kyler Brudwick added the RBI for George Fox.

Game Two: La Verne 17, Pacific 1 (Seven Innings)

The Leopards kept rolling in their second game of the day thrashing the Boxers in the seven-inning win. 

La Verne exploded for 12 runs in the third inning sparked by a leadoff triple by Lukas Granado. Two batters later, Benson doubled down the leftfield line to score Vogel and Granado.

The Leopards kept rolling in the inning with Peres stepping up later in the inning and singling in Ligot and Siffert. La Verne finished with nine hits in the inning.

Alfredo Frey got the win on the mound, going five innings, striking out two with no earned runs.

Peres led the with four RBI. Ligot went 3-4 with two RBI, two runs, and a walk.  Granado finished 2-3 at the plate with a triple and a double and two runs scored. 

Christian Killian and Shiota both totaled two RBI.

Next Game

The Leopards conclude the Cactus Classic tomorrow Sunday at 10 a.m. against UT Dallas.
