No. 11 Men's Golf takes 3rd at West Cup

LA VERNE, CA — Hisham Hussein tied for third individually and the No. 11 University of La Verne men's golf team took third at the prestigious West Cup on Tuesday.

The West Cup, one of the toughest NCAA Division III tournaments in the country, featured four-top 20 teams.

The Leopards finished with a team score of 889 behind winners No. 13 Claremont-Mudd Scripps who took the top spot with a score of 874, and second place No. 8 Redlands at 883.

Hussein was the top finisher for the Leopards in a three-way tie for third with George Fox's Mason Koch and Redlands' Jake Hollander. The senior opened the tournament with a 74 and stayed consistent over the next two rounds shooting a 73 each time for a card of 220. The Stags' Ken Kong took the individual title with a score of 212.

The Leopards started hot on day one shooting a combined 291 led by Jason Brown's 69, the low score of the round. La Verne kept the lead at the end of day one with a team score of 295 in round two.

Brown tied for 10th overall with a final card of 222 after shooting a 75 in round two and a 78 in round three.

Conner Davis added a top-20 finish with a score of 227 to tie for 19th. The senior's best round came in the first round when he shot a 72.

Sophomore Pitiluk Phanomchai tied for 28th with a score of 229 and freshman Connor Dunlop took 33rd with a card of 230.

The Leopards' B squad also turned in a solid performance taking seventh overall, showcasing the Leopards' depth.

Sophomore Jake Littlejohn led the group with a 13th place finish with a card of 224, bookending the tournament with scores of 72 in the first and third rounds. Littlejohn led the Leopards and tied for second overall with 11 birdies.

Nathan Stepanski tied four 28th at 299. Brandon Blum tied four 40th with a score of 234 and registered the only eagle in the tournament for La Verne.

Next Round

The Leopards get back to conference action at SCIAC No. 2 on April 6 and 7 at Industry Hills Golf Course.
