No. 11 Men's Golf set for NCAA Championships

NICHOLASVILLE, KY — The No. 11 University of La Verne men's golf team will look to add on to its SCIAC Championship season with a strong showing at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.

The tournament, hosted by Transylvania University, will begin with 42 teams and six individuals, a total of 216 participants. Team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play. After the first 36 holes, the field will be cut down to the top 18 teams and the top six individuals not on those teams.

The Leopards are set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. eastern time.

The Team

The Leopards enter the tournament ranked 11th in the nation by both Golfstat and the GCAA. The Leopards picked up their 10th SCIAC title in program history with sophomore Pitiluk Phanomchai taking second overall. La Verne makes an appearance at the DIII Championships for the second straight season and will bring back to the championships three golfers who participated in last year's tournament.

The Golfers

Conner Davis

Conner will look to earn back-to-back All-American honors after finishing seventh at last year's tournament. The senior was named Second Team All-SCIAC for the second time in his career after finishing 12th  at the SCIAC Championships, fifth at the Warrior Invitational, sixth at SCIAC No. 1, and in the top-20 at the West Cup.

Hisham Hussein

Hussein enters the tournament after earning First Team All-SCIAC for the second straight season. The senior, who was last year named the Lee Fulmer SCIAC Athlete of the Year, tied for fourth at the SCIAC Championships this season, took third at SCIAC No. 2, and tied for third at the West Cup.

 

Pitiluk Phanomchai

Phanomchai heads into the tournament looking to continue his already stellar underclassmen career. The 2018 Ken Sherman SCIAC Newcomer of the Year finished second individually at the SCIAC Championships this year, tied for first at SCIAC No. 1, and won the Poet Challenge. Phanomchai earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week recognition twice this season and earned First Team All-SCIAC honors for the second year in a row. 

Jason Brown 

Brown will be making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. The junior posted a top-10 finish at both the Warrior Invitational and the West Cup and finished in the top-20 at the SCIAC Championships. Brown shot the round one low score of 69 at the West Cup.

 

Jake Littlejohn

Littlejohn was also be making his debut appearance in the NCAA postseason. Littlejohn finished in the top-10 at the Warrior Invitational and placed in the top-15 at the West Cup. The sophomore played a crucial role for the Leopards at the SCIAC Championships with three birdies in the final round.
