La Verne, CA: La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer split their double header on Saturday afternoon. Dropping game one and taking game two by blasting two homers and scoring 7 runs in the 5th inning to win 10-5.
Game One
The Leopards dropped game one of the double header by a score of 9-4. La Verne trailed early on 2-0. In the bottom of the third La Verne tied the game up at 2-2 on an RBI base hit by Kat Navarro followed by a steal of home by Haylee Hsieh. The Leopards could not hold down the offense of the Saghens as they jumped out to a large lead shortly after the game tying steal of home. La Verne fought back with two more runs in the 5th inning on a pinch-hit RBI double by Natalia Aguilera followed by a pinch-hit RBI single by Julie Contreras. The Leopards were unable to scratch across any more runs in the final two innings as they fell to the Sagehens 9-4.
Game Two
Sagehens carried their game one momentum into game two as they scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Leopards responded with a run of their own in the first inning. Kat Navarro singled in Haylee Hsieh to tie the game at 1-1. La Verne trailed once more in the 5th inning 2-1, but Julie Contreras would single in Haylee Hsieh to even the score at 2-2. Kat Navarro stepped up and then drilled a home run over the leftfield fence to power the Leopards to a 4-2 lead. La Verne would not be stopped there as they tacked on 3 more runs courtesy of s pinch-hit 3-run bomb by Alyssa Campbell to take a comadning 8-2 lead. The Sagehens rallied for 3 runs in the 6th but the Leopards quickly responded with 2 runs on a pair of RBI singles by Janisa Rojo and Ashley Rodriguez scoring pinch-runners Jillian Gellatly and Clarissa Salazar to make it 10-5 La Verne. Rachel Rubio would finish off the Sagehens striking out two in the top of the 7th.
Standouts
Haylee Hiseh reached base safely in 8 of her 9 plate appearances in the double header, racking up 4 hits, 4 runs, and 3 stolen bases. Julia Contreras collected 3 hits, drove in 2, and scored twice. Kat Navarro collected 4 RBIS over the two games including a 2-run homer in the second game. Alyssa Campbell hit her second big fly of the season, a pinch-hit 3-run homer in game two.
Season Impact
Pomona-Pitzer is now 3-7 on the year and 1-5 in SCIAC. La Verne is 6-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.
