Leopards Clash With Regals

Thousand Oaks, CA: The Leopards won 6-5 over the Regals on Friday night, scoring four runs in the first inning and hanging on to win it late. 

How It Happened

La Verne put up a four run first inning to give them a 4-0 lead right of the bat. Nat Agulera hit an RBI double to start the scoring off. Marissa Acosta reached on an error and drove in a run to make it 2-0. Janisa Rojo and Julie Contreras each knocked in a run with a base hit to make it 4-0. 

Cal Lutheran cut the deficit in half with a two run 4th inning to make it 4-2 La Verne. The Leopards countered with a two run homer in the 5th inning off the bat of Alyssa Campbell to extend the lead back to a four run lead at 6-2. The Regals fought back, scoring two runs in the 6th and a run in the 7th but stranded the tying and winning run on the bases. La Verne hung on to secure the win 6-5. 

Standouts 

Taylor Gray went 4-4 at the plate and scored a run. Alyssa Campbell went 3-4 including hitting a two-run homer, her 4th of the season. Janisa Rojo collected two hits and drove in a run. 

Season Impact

The Leopards improved to 23-12 overall and 10-6 in SCIAC. They host the Regals tomorrow afternoon at Campus West for a double header scheduled at Noon and 2:00 PM

La Verne, CA: The University of La Verne Leopards defeated the Cal Lutheran Regals 1-0 and 8-2 in a double header sweep on Saturday afternoon. 

Game One

The Leopards and Regals were deadlocked in a pitchers duel. Madison Gunn, of the Regals, was able to keep the Leopards at bay offensively for most of the game, pitching five scoreless innings before La Verne gained the lead in the 6th inning. Matching Gunn pitch-for-pitch was Katelyn Shephard who pitched a total of six scoreless innings, the most in her Leopard career. Shephard also racked up a season high six strikeouts in the game as well. La Verne, got a solo home run off the bat of Kat Navarro in the bottom of the 6th inning to give them a 1-0 lead. Navarro also came in to pitch the 7th inning and picked up the final three outs of the 1-0 shutout. 

Game Two

Madison Gunn started the second game of the double header for the Regals and picked up where she left off, tallying 3 more scoreless innings to start the game. Kat Navarro starting in the circle for La Verne in game two matched her as well and the game was scoreless after three innings of play. La Verne took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning with an RBI double from Alyssa Campbell. Cal Lutheran responded with two runs in the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead. La Verne countered with a four run 5th inning, capped off by a two-run blast by Nat Aguilera to give the Leopards a 5-2 lead. La Verne doubled their three run lead in the 6th inning by scoring three more runs on two sacrifice flies and an RBI single by Erika Garcia to give the Leo's an 8-2 lead and winning 8-2. 

Standouts 

Kat Navarro continues to add to her career year hitting her 7th homer and picking up her 7th win of the season, both career highs. Taylor Gray stayed hot at the plate collecting four hits including two doubles. Katelyn Shephard picked up her second win of the season while pitching six scoreless innings and tallying a season high six punchouts. 

Season Impact 

University of La Verne improved to 25-12 overall and 12-6 in SCIAC. The Leopards will play their final home game of the regular season this Friday against the Chapman Panthers. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
