Leopards Take On The Poets In Weekend Action

La Verne, CA:  Today the University of La Verne Leopards split a double header against the Whittier Poets, winning game one 4-3 and dropping game two 6-2. The Leopards faced Whittier last night at Whittier and won on the road by a final score of 7-6.

Game One 

The Poets came out swinging in the first inning scoring all three runs in the first inning. Jocelyn Robertson came in on relief to get the Leopards out of the inning as she got the final two outs of the inning. Jocelyn Robertson kept the Poets at bay pitching 6.2 scoreless innings.  The Leopards slowly chipped away at the lead by scoring one in the 3rd off a Katheryn Navarro RBI single to score Haylee Hsieh and scoring one in the 6th inning on a bases loaded walk by Jelena Aguon. Navarro once again delivered in the clutch as she knocked in the tying run with a double to bring home Hsieh to even the game at 3-3. Navarro advanced to third on the throw home and scored the winning run on a throwing error by the catcher as they tried to get Navarro out heading to 3rd and the Leopards won the game 4-3 on a wild finish. 

Game Two 

La Verne carried their momentum from the walk off win in game one into game two as they scored in the first inning. Katheryn Navarro drove in Haylee Hsieh to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. La Verne doubled their lead when Navaro once again drove in a run, this time second baseman Taylor Gray to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead. The Poets finally got to La Verne's starter, Rachel Rubio, scoring 6 runs in the 5th inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead. The Leopards were unable to mount a comeback and dropped the second game by a score of 6-2. 

Standouts 

Jocelyn Robertson tossed a total of 9.1 scoreless innings out of relief and picked up the win in game one to improve to 2-0 on the season. Kat Navarro went 5-8 at the plate while driving in 4 RBI's. Haylee Hsieh went 4-7 and scored 3 runs for La Verne. Taylor Gray went 2-4, layed down two sacrifice bunts, and scored a run. 

Season Impact

La Verne moves to 14-7 on the season and 4-2 in SCIAC, remaining in 2nd place in conference. 

Next Up

The Leopards hit the road this Friday as they will play George Fox at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
