Leopards Finish Off Tigers In Sweep On The Road

Los Angeles, California - The University of La Verne softball team was back in action seeking to sweep the series with Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. Victorious over the Tigers on Friday evening with a 10-2 victory at the La Verne Softball Stadium, the Leopards carried the momentum from that win into their road doubleheaders.


La Verne started off the first game with a single by Kat Navarro, which led to Haylee Hsieh scoring the first run of the game for the Leopards. The first inning of play would end with both teams tied having scored one run each. The Leopards scored two runs in the second inning when Haylee Hsieh doubled to left field leading to runs scored by Clarissa Salazar and Jelena Aguon. La Verne exploded with four runs in the sixth inning, increasing their lead to 9-4. Scoring two more runs in the seventh inning, LA Verne defeated Occidental in the first game of the doubleheader by a final score of 11-4. Leopards centerfielder Haylee Hsieh had five hits in the game to go with five RBIs. Shortstop Katheryn Navarro had three hits and one RBI.


The Leopards started the second game of the doubleheader on fire as they scored five runs in the opening inning of play. Haylee Hsieh continued her great play from the start as she singled to right field, and then stole second base. A single by Taylor Gray put the Leopards in position to score when Kat Navarro stepped to the plate and doubled, leading to scores by Taylor Gray and Haylee Hsieh. La Verne would score seven runs in the first four innings of play while keeping the Tigers of Occidental scoreless. Katheryn Navarro controlled the game from the mound for the Leopards, as she pitched six innings, throwing six strikeouts. The Leopards exploded scoring four more runs in the sixth inning as they would again defeat the Tigers by a final score of 11-1. The victory brought the Leopards record to 22-9 overall and 9-3 in SCIAC conference play.


La Verne returns to action Friday, April 15th at home against Redlands. The game starts at 3:00 pm.
