La Verne Swim and Dive Falls to CMS in SCIAC Action

The University of La Verne swim and dive teams returned to competition against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in SCIAC swim and dive action Saturday afternoon in Claremont.  Despite their best efforts, the Leopard men fell 191-85 and the women were defeated 214-44.

La Verne diver Scott MacKay had an outstanding day capturing first place in both the 1 meter (167.60) and 3 meter (213.75) diving events.  Maddie Lovrensky remains a SCIAC powerhouse for the Leos placing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.02 and two very competitive splits in the medley and freestyle relays.

The day was highlighted by La Verne captain Marc Okimura and his stellar performances in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events.  Okimura stood atop all competitors with times of 59.86 and 2:09.48, respectively.  Coleman Goode secured a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching out CMS senior Jordan Lieberman by just .13 seconds with a time of 54.72.

Other notable performances included Cody Yeo's near first finish in the 200 freestyle (1:47.37) and 2nd place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:20.27).  Nicole Carlton was 2 seconds shy of a top finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:34.54.

"We set 12 season best times at this meet. This is huge if you take into consideration the very tough week of training we had." said Leopard head coach Pat Skehan.  "Training hard and still racing our best against the very best in SCIAC speaks volumes' about this team's growth and potential to be an impact team in this conference."

The La Verne swim team will continue SCIAC action next Saturday as they take on the Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental at 11:00am.
