Swim and Dive Opens Season at Redlands Pentathlon

REDLANDS, CA — The University of La Verne swimming and diving team opened up the 2019-20 season at the University of Redlands Pentathlon.

The Leopards were led by transfers Jessica Argelander and Brian McAteer. Argelander scored the best finish of the day for the Leopards with a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (55.75) and a 19th place overall finish. Brian finished tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.43) and 22nd overall.

The Pentathlon is different than any other meet as every individual swims in five events 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard individual medley. Swimmers do not focus on their specialty but rather attempt to race their weakest strokes well.

The La Verne swimmers saw a 91 percent improvement over last year's times and lots of young talent stepped up to score.

From the Coach

"We did a good job focusing on technique and detail and improved in every single event," said La Verne Head Coach Pat Skehan. "I was most impressed with our ability to fight through and get better as events went on. The last event the 100 IM was our best. It takes a lot to stay focused and keep finding ways to get faster. I am excited about our future."

Next Meet

The Leopards jump back into the pool on Saturday, November 9 at Cal Lutheran to race against both the Kingsmen and Regals and Pomona-Pitzer. The SCIAC opener will begin at 11 a.m.
