Argelander Leads Leopards on Day 1 of Collegiate Winter Invite

LOS ANGELES — Jessica Argelander swam one of the fastest times in La Verne history in the 50-yard freestyle and the University of La Verne swim and dive team opened the annual Collegiate Winter Invitational at East Los Angeles College on Friday.

Argelander got out fast and closed faster in the finals of the 50 freestyle. The senior clocked in at 23.96 breaking the 24-second mark for just the second time of her career and the first time outside of a relay event. The time comes second only to Leopard legend Maddie Lovrensky who posted a time of 23.62 at the 2015 SCIAC Championships. With plenty of time for improvement, Argelander has a shot to place her name atop the La Verne record book in the event.

In the men's 200-yard individual medley, Lorenzo De Leon led La Verne with a sixth-place finish, clocking in at 1:59.52. Brian McAteer finished 12th in the event with a time of 2:02.33.

In the distance events, the Leopards were represented by Trevor Ichiki who clocked in at 4:54.57 in seventh place in the finals of the men's 500-yard freestyle. Gavin Volkov made the consolation final in the event placing 11th overall with a time of 5:32.56.

Alondra Camacho and Brooke Sorbel led the Leopards in the women's 200-yard individual medley. Camacho led the way with a 14th place finish at 2:19.35 and Sorbel followed close behind in 15th place at 2:24.32. Ashley Meza finished 16th overall in the event with a time of 2:26.97 in place.

A trio of Leopards earned sports in the consolation finals of the women's 500-yard freestyle with Kylie Hicks, Samantha Szok, and Carli Willis each making an appearance. Willis took 11th overall (5:36.21), Szok placed 13th (5:46.82), and Hicks finished 15th (6:05.41).

In the 200 freestyle relay, the La Verne men's squad of De Leon, Brandon Pham, Cristian Gonzales, and McAteer placed fifth with a time of 1:29.74. On the women's side, Argelander, Meza, Camacho and Roxanna Ramirez posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:42.18.

The La Verne men's squad of De Leon, McAteer, Ichiki, and Gonzales took seventh in the 400 medley relay at 4:44.40. The women's team of Camacho, Ramirez, Willis, and Argelander took sixth with a time of 4:14.59.

The Leopards currently sit in third place in the team standings.
