Pioneers edge Leopards

HAYWARD, CA — Jassmine Kezman scored four times but the Leopards couldn't overcome a big second quarter by Cal State East Bay, falling to the Pioneers 13-8.

STAT LEADERS

  • Kezman's four goals led all players.
  • Ilene Guerrero scored twice and added an assist.
  • Victoria Mezack dished out one assist and scored once.
  • Jordan Ehara scored one goal.
  • Reining SCIAC Athlete of the Week Shelby Garcia finished with 11 saves and one steal.
  • The Pioneers were led by Ivanna Anderson's three goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards went go-for-goal with CSUEB in the first quarter, ending the frame tied 4-4.
  • The Pioneers took advantage from there, going on a 9-3 run over the next two periods to take command of the game.
  • La Verne blanked CSUEB in the final quarter but couldn't muster enough offense for a comeback.

BEYOND THE BOX

  • Kezman leads the SCIAC with 50 total goals and 58 points.
  • Mezack leads the conference with 23 assists.

SEASON IMPACT

  • La Verne now stands at 4-10 overall. CSUEB improve to 10-10 overall.

NEXT GAME

  • The Leopards return to SCIAC action this Saturday when they travel to Eagle Rock to play Occidental in an 11 a.m. game.
