LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne women's water polo team went on a 7-3 run in the second half to defeat the visiting Chapman Panthers 11-7 Wednesday afternoon at Las Flores Park.
Season Impact
It was a big win for the Leopards as they look to stay in contention for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. At 4-3 in conference play, the Leopards currently sit in the fourth spot a half game in front of Redlands. La Verne improves to 6-10 overall.
Chapman falls to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in the SCIAC.
Stat Leaders
Guarina Garcia led all players with four goals to go with a pair of assists and steals. Jassmine Kezman finished with three goals and two steals. Victoria Mezack scored twice
Sage Nowell had a big game, totaling two assists and two steals. Kelly Riedel added one assist and one steal.
Shelby Garcia was solid in the cage, grabbing nine saves. Ilene Guerrero and Alicia Thompson each scored once.
Chapman was led by Mia Chanove's two goals and one assist.
How it Happened
The Leopards got off to a hot start, taking an 4-0 lead under six minutes into the contest and looked like they would blow out the visitors.
But Chapman didn't quit and went a 4-0 run of their own and shut the Leopards out in the second quarter to even the game.
The Leopards responded out of the break outscoring the Panthers 4-1 in the third to pull away for good.
Next Game
The Leopards are back in action on Thursday when they play Brown University at 7 p.m. at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce.
