CLAREMONT, CA — Guarina Garcia found the back of the net just over a minute and a half into the fourth quarter to even the game 6-6 against first place Pomona-Pitzer Saturday afternoon.
But the Sagehens scored twice in the final minutes to spoil the University of La Verne women's water polo team's upset attempt, beating the Leopards 8-6.
Season Impact
The Leopards, who earlier in the week scored a big win over Whittier, remain in a tie for third place with the Poets at 6-4 in SCIAC play and 8-12 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer improves to 15-11 overall and 10-0 in the conference.
Garcia had an outstanding game for the Leopards. The senior led all players with five goals and defensively added three steals.
Ilene Guerrero added a second quarter powerplay goal for La Verne. Jassmine Kezman finished with an assist and two steals.
Current SCIAC Athlete of the Week Shelby Garcia had another huge game in the cage for the Leopards. The junior racked up nine saves to keep La Verne in the game.
The Sagehens were led by Natalie Hill's two goals and two assists.
Next Game
The Leopards return home on Wednesday to face the Caltech Beavers at 4 p.m.
