LOS ANGELES — Attackers Jassmine Kezman and Guarina Garcia each scored six times and the University of La Verne women's water polo jumped out to a big first quarter lead on the way to a 16-5 win at Occidental.
Season Impact
The Leopards improve to 5-10 overall and pull to .500 in the SCIAC at 3-3. La Verne, who is battling for a spot in the four-team SCIAC Postseason Tournament, currently sit in fourth place in the conference with a half-game lead over Redlands.
Occidental falls to 7-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Stat Leaders
Garcia also added a game-high four steals to go with her six goals. Kezman added one steal with her six goals.
Ilene Guerrero totaled two goals, one assist, and one steal. Jordan Ehara and Sage Nowell each scored once.
Shelby Garcia picked up the win in the cage with 11 saves and one steal. Samantha Murillo totaled two saves in a quarter of work.
Emilie Eastman, Sage Nowell, Shelby Garcia, and Guerero each recorded an assist.
How it Happened
The Leopards took a 3-0 lead just over four and a half minutes into the game off goals by Guerrero, Kezman, and Garcia. The trio each scored one more time in the frame to give the Leopards a 6-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
La Verne scored six more times in the second quarter and the rout was on.

The Leopards took advantage of powerplays situations scoring on five of eight opportunities.
Beyond the Box Sore
Kezman's six goals ties her season high. She also scored six goals McKendree and St. Francis (PA). Kezman leads the SCIAC with 56 goals.
Garcia also matches her season-high single-game goal total having also netted six shots earlier in the week at Fresno Pacific.
Nex Game
The Leopards return to action on Wednesday when they host Chapman at 4 p.m.
