Willamette Draws La Verne’s First Blood

Nate Rodriguez, Sports Information Intern

La Verne, CA - The Leopards' women's soccer team surrendered their first loss of the season Friday night, a 1-0 finish to the Willamette Bearcats.

Willamette's Nina Krasner-Cybulski connected for the match's only goal, skipping a stone between the pipes midway through the 67th minute. Leopards' goalkeeper McKenzie Maggiore added two saves on the opponents' three shots on goal.

La Verne tallied 12 shots by night's end, but only one strike from Brianna Wong was saved as the Leopards' lone shot on goal. Wong and Sarah Ramirez got three shots off; Ramirez came closest to what would have been La Verne's first goal with a rocket off the crossbar just before the 82nd minute.

Other notable Leos that took shots on the Bearcats' keeper were Brooklyn Daley (2), Toni Escobar, Alyssa Moran and Shelbie Mueller.

The Leopards' record moves to 3-1 on the early season, while the Bearcats add their second win in two games. La Verne finishes their preseason tune-ups and squares off next in the SCIAC opener, Wednesday evening May 14 at Ortmayer Stadium.
